Interpreting for deaf refugees is extremely demanding regarding emotional investment and strategic communication of interpreters and the collaboration between participants in the setting. Salient aspects of working in this highly sensitive setting will be presented. Typical pitfalls will be illustrated as well as strategic ways out will be explored.

  • Empowerment – How can you implement into the interpretation process?
  • Deepening of theoretical approaches of the intercultural Communication in interdisciplinary contexts.
  • The intercultural differences and synergies between refugees of deeply religious Christian and Muslim backgrounds in a Christian-secular legal environment.
  • The collaboration between deaf and hearing interpreter on the one hand, the interpreters and the other participants on the other.
  • Interpreting position for refugees is international networking of professional work.

The training method employed, Interpreting Enactments, allows for theoretical and practical input and self-reflection

Training Schedule

The training will be held in Tirana from 19th to 21st October 2018. The training schedule is as follows:
  • Friday 19th October from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm
  • Saturday 20th October from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Sunday 21st April October 9:00 am to 12:00 am

Who is our trainer?

Ege Karar

Ege Karar is a social pedagogue and a certified Deaf sign language interpreter in DGS, TID and International Sign. He is a research assistant and PhD candidate working at the Competence Center for Sign Language and Gesture of the RWTH University Aachen, Germany. He leads the project Deaf Mentoring, Peer Counseling.
He serves the national Deaf association a committee member for migration and refugees.

Communication at the TOD

Training will be delivered in International Sign (IS).
Correspondence with efsli and official documents will be in English.
