This training will focus on the variety of work within the area of interpreting in employment settings with a focus on goals and values across this field of action.
The following topics will be discussed:
– Deaf Employment: An Overview
– DESIGNS: An Introduction
– Deaf employers/professionals and interpreters: what makes this relationship successful
– Analysis of case studies: e.g. Interpreted job interviews, interpreted career-upgrade trainings, interpreted office meetings, etc.
– Ethical issues
– Hands-on-practice sessions

Who are our trainers?
Prof. Lorraine Leeson (Trinity College Dublin)
Dr. Lorraine Leeson is Ireland’s inaugural Professor of Deaf Studies. She serves as Director of Research at the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, Trinity College Dublin (University of Dublin) and Co-Director of the College’s Centre for Deaf Studies. Her research work focuses on the linguistics and applied linguistics of sign languages, including interpreting studies. She has engaged in pan-European research work with academic institutions, Deaf communities and interpreting organisations for over two decades: current projects include “DESIGNS” (Erasmus+), which focuses on deaf graduates’ access to employment and “Promoting Excellence in Sign Language Instruction” (European Centre for Modern Languages). In 2008, she was named a European Language Ambassador for her work. Lorraine has been an interpreter for over 20 years and is Co-Chair of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters Committee of Experts. She co-authored “Sign Language in Action” with Prof. Jemina Napier (Palgrave, 2016), and is co-author of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) Yearbook, “Interpreting and the Politics of Recognition” with Dr. Christopher Stone (Routledge, 2017).
Prof. Christian Rathmann (University of Berlin)
Dr. Christian Rathmann is professor in the Section for Deaf Studies and sign language interpreting at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany where he directs BA- and MA programs in Deaf Studies and sign language interpreting. Moreover, he co-directs two professional training programs in Deaf interpreting/Translation and sign language education at Universität Hamburg, Germany. His ongoing research projects include (but not limited to) interpreting & translation studies, linguistics for signed languages (esp. sign language corpus), LI/12 acquisition, sign language learning & teaching and Deaf Studies.
Haaris Sheikh, coordinator of the DESIGNS project, will actively take part in the training.
Haaris Sheikh is Chief Executive of Interesource Group (Ireland) Limited; Adjunct Assistant Professor in Deaf Studies, Trinity College Dublin, and Director of Deaf Community Centre Limerick.
He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and Member of the Institute of Management Consultants and Advisers (IMCA). He serves as a Board Member of the Citizens Information Centre Limerick. He has directed and chaired 17 European Commission projects in over 16 countries to date. Currently, he is Chairman of the DESIGNS project (2016-2019). Haaris is a specialist in human resource management, business strategy, and policy and is retained as an advisor and consultant to several private and public sector organisations where his core function focuses on executive management and HR policy formulation. He has delivered talks and lectures on a wide range of HR-related themes. He has been working extensively with Deaf studies projects for the past decade and has been the architect of multimedia/digital teaching materials for the Centre for Deaf Studies at Trinity College Dublin. He has authored/co-authored numerous reports and journal articles, and has presented papers internationally on a range of topics. He has also directed 10 international research and education online documentaries.
Communication at the School
International Sign and spoken English. IS/English interpretation will be provided.
Correspondence with efsli and official documents will be in English.

L1 and L2 sign language interpreters interested in this topic.

Selection of participants will be made according to the “first come, first served” system.
How much does it cost?
The registration fee includes tuition, coffee breaks and course material. Participants will have to arrange for their own accommodation and travel. A list of hotels will be provided to registered participants.

Individual membership is open to Sign Language Interpreters within Europe and other interested persons who subscribe to the aim and objectives of efsli.

Cancellation policy:
Please be advised that if you wish to cancel your registration then the following applies.
If your cancellation is received:
• before 10th May 2017: 50% refund minus bank transfer fee
• after 11th May 2017: no refund
Changes in registration is 50 Euro. This charge will be applied if you decide not to cancel your registration but send someone else instead of you. Cancellations must be sent by email to admin@efsli.org and need to be confirmed by efsli.
