The training in Milan will combine theory and practice from a deaf and hearing perspective on:
– The difference between translating, sight interpreting and interpreting
– The process of translation
– Working with a Teleprompter/autocue/scrolling text
– Reading between the lines, pragmatics and multimedia
There will be practical exercises and some discussion of DIN EN ISO 17100 in relation to the quality of your work and quality assurance.
Dr Christopher Stone from London, UK, is a senior lecturer (associate professor) at the University of Wolverhampton; he is also a certified sign language interpreter (BSL/ASL/IS/English) who works in a variety of educational, community and political settings.
His research interests include sign language translation, translanguaging and multimodal resources used during translation and interpreting as well as the sociology of sign language translation, interpreting and its history.
Benedikt J. Sequeira Gerardo from Berlin, Germany, is a state certified sign language interpreter and works as translator since 2003.
He was born and grew up in the state of Hesse and completed his Abitur (secondary school qualification) in Essen. After this, he spent a year in Denmark, taking part in the course programme “frontrunners” at community college. There, he improved, in particular, his skills in International Sign.
Since 2013 he leads in Berlin his company yomma, which develops individual concepts for the implementation of accessible media. Working as translator is his “daily bread”.
The workshop will cover several topics of ethics including: the reasons for Deaf and hearing teams and explaining to consumers/service users, roles and responsibilities within the Deaf-hearing team, insider-outsider ethics and trust within team, with the Deaf community and with mainstream consumers.
