Her career, marking its 50th year, has taken her around much of the world. She authored two books, Sign Language Interpreting: A Basic Resource Book, Say It With Sign and numerous book chapters, professional articles and handbooks.

In addition to teaching sign language interpreters and interpreter educators at all levels, she has been involved in the education of spoken language interpreters and interpreter educators.

Programme outline

In an atmosphere of safety, mutual respect, and fun, this efsli school will focus on the issues and skills involved in interpreting in educational settings. There will be opportunities to learn and apply the subject matter through participation, which encourages optimal learning. Lecture and discussion will be followed by “hands-on” activities to reinforce the material.

We will begin with an overview of educational interpreting in Europe by a EUDY representative. Topics will include the following: best practices; dealing with simultaneous visual and auditory information; personal and professional issues and standards; ethics, protocol and role of the interpreter; skills; vocabulary; preparation; accommodation for age of students, students with multiple disabilities, particular settings and situations; relationships with stakeholders (administrators, teachers, students, parents, the Deaf community, etc.); toddler through post-graduate environments; team interpreting (including Deaf Interpreters); debriefing; overuse and other self-care issues; building confidence; and support systems.

Activities will include role-play, discussion and brainstorming. Ideally there would be at least two participants from each language and/or country to facilitate practice in their own languages.

We will strive to create cohesion and structures so that when the training is over the participants retain connections to one another and to the material covered, as well as a sense of community that encourages and supports further learning and growth.
