Frequently asked questions
Registration deadline:
30th June 2016
1) What is the 2016 efsli Summer school about?
The central topic of this school is Interpreting for Deaf refugees. In this particularly, highly sensitive setting, the power and culture differences are blantantly asymmetrical and human rights are at stake. During the training, the complexity of the setting is broken down into the many aspects involved: (i) power relations and intercultural interplay between Deaf culture, Muslim and Western Culture, (ii) collaboration of Deaf and Hearing interpreters, (iii) Code of Ethics, (iv) legal frameworks, (v) psychological implications for both, interpreter and customer and (vi) material and techniques for self-study and networking. The training method employed, Interpreting Enactments, allows for theoretical and practical input and self-reflection. It is adapted from a specifically designed role-play concept for interpreters developed by Dr. Sebnem Bahadir rooted in drama, anthropology and interpreting.
