Overview
The Training Officer plays a key role in shaping and delivering efsli’s professional development activities. Working in close collaboration with the Board of Directors and fellow officers, the role is responsible for conceptualising, organising and implementing training activities aligned with the annual work plan.
This position requires autonomy, strong organisational skills, and a good understanding of the interpreting profession in Europe. The Training Officer will liaise with trainers, interpreters and contractors, ensure accessibility standards are implemented, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of efsli’s training programme.
Flexibility is required, including occasional evenings and weekends depending on event delivery.
Job summary
The Training Officer supports the professional development of both new and existing members by identifying learning priorities and translating them into structured, high-quality training initiatives.
The role maintains an overview of members’ training needs and works collaboratively to design and deliver sustainable programmes that reflect efsli’s strategic objectives.
The Training Officer also ensures that accessibility requirements, including interpreting provision (at minimum in International Sign and English), are planned and implemented within agreed budgets.
Duties and Responsibilities
Training Strategy & Member Engagement
- Identify and assess members' training needs through structured consultations and feedback
- Translate identified priorities into sustainable training initiatives aligned with efsli's annual plan
Training Design & Delivery
- Identify and engage qualified academic and practitioner trainers across Europe
- Design and organize tailored training programmes
- Develop and maintain training materials, guidance documents and evaluation tools
- Monitor quality and effectiveness through structured feedback mechanisms
Event Coordination & Accessibility
- Plan timelines and oversee logistical organisation of training activities
- Manage registrations and participant communication
- Ensure accessibility arrangements, including interpreting provision (minimum International Sign and English), are properly organised
Communication & Alignment
- Provide accurate event information for promotion
- Ensure documentation and reporting align with efsli's strategic objectives
Specific Knowledge and Experience
Professional Experience
- Experience in sign language interpreting is essential
- Minimum 3 years' experience organising and delivering training, including designing and maintaining training materials
- European networks of academic and practitioner trainers are highly desirable
- Knowledge of efsli networks and European interpreting structures is advantageous
Skills & Competencies
- Strong organisational and planning skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
- Good communication skills in English (B2/C1 level)
- Intermediate level in International Sign desirable
- Knowledge of at least one national sign language essential
- Ability to conduct structured needs assesments
- Familiarity with performance-tracking tools and evaluation methods
Education and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in interpreting or related field
- Qualification or proven experience in instruction, learning design or related areas
Confidentiality, Belgian Law Compliance, and Safeguarding
The post-holder must comply with GDPR requirements and ensure that training activities align with Belgian law and relevant EU funding obligations.
